I will be applying for my 3rd H1-B extension soon. If for some reason the H1-B renewal gets rejected, do rules allow for applying for a H1-B transfer soon after the rejection.

Yes you can! Did it myself. There is nothing as an H-1B transfer. Does it say anywhere your H-1B xfer has been approved on your H-1B receipt?? Its always a new H-1B. Only benefit you get is, you will be exempt from the quota forever.

Below is a rough checklist I prepared for myself:
1. Six Photographs with name on back in pencil. YES
2. Copy of Birth Certificate with affidavits from Parents. YES
3. Checks for Filing fees. YES
4. Completed forms I-485, G-325A, G-28, I-765 and I-131. YES
5. Color Copies of passports. YES
6. Copy of I-94 both sides. YES
7. Copies of F-1 visa, I-20, OPT EAD and H1B visas. YES
8. Copies of W2s and tax returns for the years 2004, 2005 and 2006. YES
9. Medical examination Report. YES
11. Letter of Employment. YES
12. Copy of EAD and EAD application receipt. YES
13. Bank statement. YES

-> H1 (797 approval notice) is valid
-> you enter USA on AP, you will get AOS status.
-> H1 is still valid but unusable as the status is AOS.
-> If anything happens to GC processing then you loose status, H1 will NOT become a backup.
-> The only way you change from AOS to visa status is by renewing your H1 or change jobs with H1 ( or reenter USA on H1 Visa ).

Let me add one more wrinkle:
Do you guys think I would lose my right to use EAD if I move to another employer by transferring my H1B? (I still have 2 years on it).
Please research the forumn for answer to your question...has been discussed a lot of times before...
To answer in short...You will loose your right to use EAD if your I40 is still pending and your employer decides to revoke it...

Just because you entered on AP doesn't mean you have lost you h1b, it just puts it to sleep. if ur wife is on h4 she can stay on h4 as long as you are employed by the h1b sponsoring employer. To reactivate your h1b you need to resenter the us using your h1b visa stamp, if you don't have an h1b visa stamp you would need to get it stamped at a consulate

Just wondering how did you get info from USCIS about your FP notice?
Because, I have got the receipt and when I called USCIS for my FP appointment (Called cust serv then 1,2,2,6,2,2,1), she said My info is entered into the system and they will send anything in mail. But she did not tell me whether there is FP appointment for me or not? How you do ask for that or do I have to go to level 2 cust serv rep?
Could you please advice!

Even in today's condition, you are legally clear. Why didn't company cancel the H1 ? That is company's problem. You don't have to worry about it.
IMO most likely you can get in to the country without an issue. It is worth giving a try.

Btw, one twist I have is that my birth certificate is in Punjabi. How should I get that translated. Is there a procedure? Or simply should/can I get some equivalent, such as affidavite from my parents attested by some govt authority etc.,
Also, in case I can't make it now (depends on preponing air tickets etc), may I have to wait couple of more years. My priority date is Mar'05 and EB2. Some rough idea atleast..

You can call UK consulate and ask them for this information. They have a paid phone service (~2 dollars per minute) available. If you do not mind me asking, why are you going through the pain of getting a transit visa?
they advice atleast 4-6 weeks even though avg processing time is 10 business days, you may email them its better than paying for same info
